As an educator, Cardwell has a private voice studio that encompasses a wide range of experiences, ages and locations throughout the Greater Indianapolis Community and outlying areas. Due to his experience and passion for choral music, Cardwell is also an active choral technician for many high school programs, including show choir and concert choir. In the Spring of 2014, he made his international teaching debut in Nice, France, while teaching at the International School of Nice for six weeks. With his choral and stage experience, Cardwell is consistently hired as a music director for musicals, both in high schools and the Indianapolis community. His recent directing credits include Into the Woods, Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat, The Little Mermaid, and The Addams Family. Additionally, Zach is regularly asked to adjudicate for both concert choir and solo competitions, previously working for ISSMA Solo and Ensemble, Franklin Community High School's Showfest, and Brownsburg High School's Bulldog Spectacular. Finally, he is on the faculty at the University of Indianapolis as a Music Theory Instructor and Voice Instructor for the Pre-College and Adult Music Programs, and is the Head of Chorister Instruction at Trinity Episcopal Church.
During his summers, Cardwell spends much of his time working in a variety of positions including choir director, voice instructor, vocal coach and chaperone/counselor for summer programs, competitions and choir camps. He has appeared in these roles for Franklin Community High School, Beech Grove High School, Brownsburg Community High School, Butler University's Voice Camp, the Vocal Arts Institute at the University of Indianapolis, and the Great American Songbook Vocal Academy and Competition (formerly known as the Michael Feinstein Great American Songbook High School Vocal Academy and Competition).
During college, he received numerous awards for his performance, teaching and academic achievements, such as the Outstanding Future Music Educator Award from the Indiana Music Educators Association, the Madge Cathcart Gerke Scholarship for Music Education from the Mu Phi Epsilon Foundation, the Collegiate Professional Achievement Award from the National Association for Music Education, the Esch Scholarship from the University of Indianapolis, the institution's equivalent to being named valedictorian.
Cardwell graduated summa cum laude from the University of Indianapolis with a Bachelor's of Music degree in both Music Education and Vocal Performance.
